Ball State duo helped Cardinals to comeback win at Central Michigan
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ball State's duo of Lucas Borrow and Carson Steele were named the Mid-American Conference West Division Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Both players earned recognition for the first time in their careers as Borrow earned the special teams award and Steele tabbed the offensive player of the week.
For the Cardinals, it marks the third consecutive week of recognition from the league office, joining John Paddock (Sept. 26, Oct. 3) and Jaquan Amos (Oct. 3).
Borrow had his arguably his best game in a Cardinal uniform with nine punts for an average of 45.6 yards per boot in a 17-16 win at Central Michigan. The sophomore landed four punts land inside the 20-yard line. Borrow launched three punts over 50 yards, including a career-long 62-yard boot that completely flipped the field from the Ball State 30 all the way to the Central Michigan 8-yard line.
Borrow's four punts inside the 20 on Saturday were more than he produced all last season. Through his nine punts, none of them landed in the end zone. Borrow's 14 punts inside the 20 this season are the most among all punters in the MAC.
Steele led the offensive output with 124 yards on 28 carries in Ball State's second double-digit comeback in consecutive weeks. Steele had 109 yards in the second half alone as he helped the Cardinals erase a 10-point deficit and win 17-16 at Central Michigan.
Steele reached the 100-yard plateau for the fourth time this season, which is the most among all MAC players and is tied for fourth nationally. Steele's rushing average of 101.7 per game ranks 17th nationally. In three league games, Steele is averaging 112.7 yards per game on the ground via 78 carries for 338 yards and four touchdowns.
Borrow, Steele and Cardinals return home for a pair of games at Scheumann Stadium, beginning with UConn (Oct. 15) and then welcoming in Eastern Michigan for Homecoming (Oct. 22). Both games are slated to start at 2 p.m. ET.
