Cardinals make it a priority to win the home state
MUNCIE, Ind. – Indiana is home.
For Ball State football, head coach Mike Neu and his staff know how important the state is to the program and its sustained success. That is why the staff has dedicated the entire week to stay inside the border and recruit Indiana – the Cardinal State.
"It is one of our program's top priorities to win the state of Indiana in recruiting," said Neu, a four-year letterwinner at Ball State and an Indiana native. "It is extremely valuable and important that we keep our homegrown talent and develop them into True Cardinals. I know firsthand what it means to represent this state and this program. Our staff is fired up to spend the entire week in the Cardinal State."
And when Neu – a three-time Mid-American Conference champion at Ball State – says that Indiana is a Cardinal State, he's not just talking the talk.
On the 2021 roster, Ball State had 49 players from the state of Indiana, which makes up 41 percent of the squad. That's more than any of the in-state FBS programs Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue.
In the 2022 recruiting class, the Cardinals signed seven players from Indiana, the most of any FBS program: Sam Buras, DeJuan Echoles Jr., Christopher Hood, Kyle King, Danny Royster, Max Sullivan and Maximus Webster.
With the state of Indiana represented well inside the locker room, Ball State has found a lot of success recently with a MAC Championship, back-to-back bowl berths for just the third time in program history and the program's first bowl win in the 2021 Arizona Bowl.
