'Encouraging' Fall Baseball Ends With 9-6 Win
October 20, 2019 | Baseball
After playing three exhibitions against teams of various levels of competition, Rich Maloney is encouraged with his squad. With a roster returning six position player starters and 310.2 innings from last season, 34 fall innings gave the 15th-year coach a chance to put promising newcomers in with the veterans.
Sunday's 9-6, 11-inning win over juco powerhouse Wabash Valley finished an undefeated fall that saw BSU outscore opponents 24-9. After falling behind 3-0 early, the Cardinals broke the game open with a 6-spot in the bottom of the 3rd. Ryan Peltier and Chase Sebby each doubled in the inning and outfielders Aaron Simpson and Ross Messina each singled and scored. Peltier then added an RBI single in the 4th inning and Mack Murphy and Justin Conant added RBI singles later in the game.
Wabash Valley, a team that went 55-4 last year and had players being scouted in addition to Ball State's prospects, got a 3-run homer from Jacob Plastiak and two RBIs from Freylin Minyety.Â
On the mound, Ball State used eight pitchers who combined to strike out 13 batters and scatter eight hits. Kyle Nicolas threw a pair of innings and struck out four hitters as radar guns filled the stands. Garett Simmons, a breakout player this fall, had three strikeouts in his two innings of work.Â
Ball State will now spend the rest of the fall preparing for the 2020 season. Fans are encouraged to save the date for the program's Meet The Team night, which will be Saturday, Feb. 8. More details to come.Â
