CARMEL, Ind. -- Were it not for some big numbers on arguably the hardest stretch of holes at Crooked Stick Golf Club, the Ball State men's golf team might be contending for a tournament victory this week.
But despite what could have been some debilitating numbers on holes 16 through 18 (the middle of Ball State's rounds), the Cardinals are still in position to make a run at a good finish. Thirty-six holes in the books and 18 to go in the Crooked Stick Invitational.
Ball State was 16 over par for Monday's 36-hole day: 15 over on holes 16-18 and 1 over on the remainder of the course.
Tournament leader Georgia is 4 under overall, leading Vanderbilt by two shots and Marquette by five. The 14-team field features 12 squads ranked among the nation's top 100.

It was a bit of an up-and-down day throughout the Ball State lineup, highlighted by Keegan Bronnenberg's 70 in the morning round, backed up by an 81, and Joey Ranieri's 68 in the afternoon, on the heels of an opening 82.
CJ Jones was the most consistent on the day, firing rounds of 75 and 72. At 3 over par, he is the top BSU player on the leaderboard in a tie for 18th.
The third and final round will be played Tuesday with a split tee start. The Cardinals will go off the 10th tee starting at 9 a.m., paired with Purdue and College of Charleston.
