Miles Earns Third MAC West Pitcher of the Week Honor
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - For the third time this season, Ball State junior pitcher Aeshia Miles has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week.
"Aeshia did a brilliant job last weekend," head coach Megan Ciolli Bartlett said. "She is a fierce competitor and it showed with a pair of shutout performances against a strong Bowling Green offense. We are looking forward to watching her grow and mature as the season goes along."
In a dominating performance to open the 2018 MAC season, Miles earned a pair of shutout victories over Bowling Green who entered last weekend as the best hitting team in the league with a .323 average. In fact, the Falcons averaged 5.3 runs per game entering the series and had only been shutout once this season prior to facing Miles.
Over her two games and 11.0 innings of work, Miles held the Falcons to five hits and a .132 batting average, while striking out 13 and not issuing a single walk.
In Friday's league opener, Miles struck out 10 and limited BGSU to a season-low one hit on her way to a complete game shutout victory. She retired the final 13 batters she faced, including a string of six straight strikeouts; getting the final two batters of the fourth, all three batters in the fifth and the leadoff batter in the sixth all swinging. It was her third complete game shutout win of the season and third time she has recorded double-digit strikeouts in a game this year.
In Saturday's series finale, Miles picked up her fourth complete game shutout win of the season, limiting the Falcons to just four hits while recording three strikeouts and issuing no walks.
Miles enters the week ranked first in the MAC with a 1.85 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .230 average so far this season.
Her 11 wins also lead the conference, rank 41st nationally and are as many or more than five league schools have earned this season; Buffalo (11), Central Michigan (9), Northern Illinois (9), Eastern Michigan (4) and Akron (1).
Miles and the Ball State softball team return to action Friday when they open a three-game series with a scheduled 3 p.m. first pitch at Akron. The teams conclude the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
