Men’s Volleyball Picks up First Road Win of Season Behind Reardon’s 15 Kills

LORETTO, Pa. – The Ball State men's volleyball team was able to secure its first road victory of the 2018 season with a 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19) win against Saint Francis. This marks the 15th time the Cardinals have taken down the Red Flash, leading the all-time series.
As a team, the Cardinals were able to total 48 kills on 134 attempts. Ball State was able to pick up the win despite only hitting for .172. The team finished the match with 56 digs, three solo blocks and 18 block assists.
Blake Reardon led Ball State with15 kills along with nine digs, just falling short of his first double-double of the season. Reardon also had two service aces along with one from Jake Romano and one from Matt Walsh. Walsh was also able to knock down nine kills. Romano had a match high 39 assists. Mitch Weiler tallied seven kills plus 12 digs. Ben Chinnci contributed eight kills and three digs. Defensively, Anthony Lebryk led the team with six blocks. Nick LaVanchy led the way with 14 digs.
In the opening set, the Red Flash led by as much as five before the Cardinals were able to fight their way back. Ball State was able to take set number one with a final score of, 26-24, thanks to a Saint Francis attack error. The Cardinals had 14 kills in set one.
Set two saw 10 Cardinal kills along with 10 attack errors. Reardon let the set with three kills while Weiler, Walsh, Romano, Lebryk and Szews were each able to tally one. Ball State was able to hold Saint Francis to only a .030 hitting percentage, but the Red Flash still took the set, 25-21.
Reardon was able to knock down a set-high five kills in the third set. Weiler and Ben Chinnici had three kills in the set while Walsh and Romano had one apiece. Reardon had one block and Lebryk and Romano each tallied two. Walsh had the team's lone service ace in the set, which set the Cardinals up for set point. Ball State then took the set on a Red Flash setting error, 25-19.
Ball State had 12 total kills in the fourth set with the Red Flash only knocking down nine. Weiler, Reardon and Walsh were each able to post two kills in the final set. Reardon and Romano were the two Cardinals with service aces. Chinnici led the team in kills with five, including the set and match winning point. Ball State took set four, 25-19.
The Ball State men's volleyball team now moves to 5-5 on the season. The Cardinals will begin conference action next week with trips to Ohio State and McKendree.
