Wynn Named MAC West Softball Player of the Week
February 13, 2018 | Softball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - After putting together arguably the best weekend of her collegiate career, Ball State softball sophomore center fielder Kennedy Wynn has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.
Â
In helping guide the Cardinals to a 3-2 record at the FGCU Kickoff Classic (Feb. 9-11), Wynn produced a .385 batting average, a 1.154 slugging percentage and a .556 on base percentage. Three of her five hits on the weekend were home runs, while another was a double. She also led the team with seven RBIs and five walks, while her four runs scored were second on the squad.
Â
"Last weekend was a good, solid start for the program," head coach Megan Ciolli Bartlett said. "I was impressed with the adjustments Kennedy made at the plate over the course of the weekend. She has worked tirelessly to get better since last season ended, and we are very proud of the progress she has made and her performance in Fort Myers. This level of focus and execution is something we expect from her day in and day out as a sophomore."
Â
Wynn reached base safely in all five games last weekend and recorded at least one hit in four of the contests. In the only game Wynn did not get a hit, versus LIU-Brooklyn (Feb. 9), she was walked in all three plate appearances.
Â
Wynn's best game came in the 5-1 victory over Georgetown (Feb. 10), when she blasted a pair of home runs, drove in three RBI, scored twice and drew a walk. She also provided the team's lone hit versus FGCU (Feb. 11), when she led off the fifth inning with a home run.
Â
Overall, Wynn's three home runs were one more than she collected in 56 games played as a freshman, while her five total walks were two shy of the seven she drew all of last season.
Â
Wynn and the rest of the Ball State softball team return to action Friday, when they open play in the Troy Cox Classic, hosted by New Mexico State, with a 1:15 p.m. ET / 11:15 a.m. MT matchup versus defending national champion and top-ranked Oklahoma.
Â
The Cardinals will also play their first of back-to-back games versus Boston University on the opening day of the tournament. First pitch for that game is scheduled to 6:15 p.m. ET / 4:15 p.m. CT.
