WBB Drops Season Opener To Big Ten Foe Purdue, 80-38

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's basketball team (0-1) opened its season with an 80-38 loss to Big Ten foe Purdue (1-0) Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.

For the game, Ball State was led offensively by senior guard Nakeya Penny who chipped in 13 points while teammate sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown finished the game with 11.  Freshman guard Abi Haynes led the Cardinals defensively with five rebounds.

Today's game turned out to be a classic case of veterans versus youth, as Purdue returned four of their five starters from last year's squad while Ball State welcomed three true freshmen to its starting lineup.

The opening minutes of play had both teams experiencing first game jitters.  Cassidy Hardin scored the first basket for Purdue after knocking down a 3-pointer at the 7:07 mark.  Freshman guard Anna Clephane quickly answered for Ball State with her first collegiate basket after a quick layup off of the dish from Brown.  After that, the Boilermakers ended the quarter with a 14-4 scoring spree to take a commanding 17-6 advantage over the Cardinals.

Ball State came out strong offensively to start the second frame, outscoring the Boilermakers 7-2.   The Cardinals came to within six points (19-13) with 7:06 remaining in the first half.  Clephane, Penny and junior forward Aliyah Walker each scored baskets during that three-minute stretch.

After that, Purdue would outscore Ball State 19-7 to take a 38-20 advantage over the Cardinals at intermission.  The Boilermakers shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the field in the second frame.  But the Cardinals weren't too far off statistically either, ending the quarter shooting 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the field.

Purdue expanded their defense and continued its hot shooting hand in the second half.  Ball State was unable to put points on the board to catch-up with Purdue's strong shooting in the end.

The Ball State women's basketball team continues non-conference action Sunday at home against Cleveland State.  The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. ET tipoff.

The 2008-09 Ball State women's basketball team will also be recognized for their accomplishments at Sunday's game.
