MUNCIE, Ind. -- After four months of practice and hard work, the Ball State track & field team will have a chance to prove itself Saturday (Dec. 1) as the indoor season gets underway with the Bowling Green Opener. Fourth-year head coach Brian Etelman says his team is ready to get the competition season underway.
Â
"I think there's a general sense of excitement," Etelman said. "It really has been almost four months since we started, so now it's time to go out there and see what we've got."
Â
The Cardinals will face a familiar environment as Bowling Green hosted the MAC Indoor Championships last season. Junior sprinter Amber Jones says knowing the track should help her and her teammates as they prepare for the meet.
Â
"We can go back and think about how well we did and go out there and do even better this time," Jones said. "We've been working really hard, and now we want to show what we're capable of doing."
Â
Ball State would like a repeat of last season's indoor opener where the team claimed five event victories at the Mastodon Opener in Fort Wayne. Jones says she and her team look more prepared than she ever remembers seeing in the past.
Â
"We've been running faster than we ever have since I've been here over the past three years," Jones said. "We're definitely excited to see how that reflects on the track this weekend."
Â
Etelman says he also expects the results on the track this weekend to reflect the kind of improvement he's seen from his team during the offseason.
Â
"There's been a heightened sense of competitive quality," Etelman said. "It's become more about the team and more about what they can do for each other rather than just trying to find their way. That's kind of where we were over the past few years."
Â
Jones says she and her fellow Cardinals now understand what it takes individually to improve the group as a whole.
Â
"I think we've become more comfortable with knowing our role on the team," Jones said. "Each one of us knows what is expected of us. I don't think we had that understanding in the past, but we definitely do now."
Â
Ball State hits the starting blocks Saturday in Bowling Green, Ohio. The official start time for the meet is 6 p.m.
