Men’s Volleyball Signs Two Newcomers

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State University men's volleyball head coach Joel Walton has announced the signing of two players to the 2020 class. Joining the Cardinals are Wil McPhillips of Lincoln Way East High School in Illinois, and Bryce Behrendt of Germantown High School in Wisconsin.

"We're thrilled that Bryce and Wil have decided to come to Ball State," said Walton. "They are both very skilled and accomplished players and will add a lot to what we can do on our team."

McPhillips most recently led his team to the 2018 state championship as a junior with a 39-3 overall record. He recorded 131 kills on a .507 hitting percentage for the year. The state championship run came just one season after finishing as the state runner up.

"Wil is a competitor," Walton said. "We watched him very carefully and loved what we saw from day one. He plays bigger than he is and will be great in the middle for us like so many before him have been."

McPhillips plays his club volleyball for Ultimate, and most recently led the squad to a second-place finish at the 2018 Boys Junior National Championships. McPhillips has also been named a BJNC All-American two years in a row now. McPhillips plays in the middle and will continue to do so for Ball State come 2020.

Joining McPhillips is Wisconsin Men's Volleyball Player of the Year Bryce Behrendt. Behrendt is a 6'4" outside hitter who was named first team All-State as both a junior and senior. He also claimed conference player of the year honors.

"That outside attacker position is often the engine of the team and it's important that whoever plays that position doesn't have any holes in their game. We feel like Bryce is going to be that player for us here at Ball State," Walton said.

Behrendt played in 378 career high school games and recorded 1,057 kills, 600 digs, 128 blocks and 182 aces. As a senior, he tallied 336 kills, 163 digs, 46 blocks and 69 aces. The Wisconsin Player of the Year served as a team captain as both a junior and senior while being named team MVP both years. Behrendt also competed in track and field all four years of high school.

McPhillips and Behrendt will both start competing for Ball State in 2020. The Cardinals will open their season on Jan. 4 with a home match against Princeton.
