Field Hockey Defeated by UMass-Lowell in Overtime Thriller

OXFORD, Ohio.– The Ball State field hockey team rounded out its second weekend of regular season action with a 2-1 overtime loss to UMass-Lowell at the Miami Invitational Sunday afternoon.
The first goal of the game wasn't scored until the second half. The Cardinals put a point on the board first when Michelle Shampton connected with the back of the cage in the 42nd minute. Shampton added two shots and one shot on goal to her stat sheet.
UMass-Lowell's Torrie Huk scored both goals for the River Hawks. She connected in the 57th minute off a penalty corner and then again in overtime on a tip in to secure the victory for UMass-Lowell.
Kylee Cunningham and Rachel Pereira both tallied one shot and one shot on goal. Hillary Scott and Darbi Gullett each added one shot while Carley Shannon marked two shots and one shot on goal.
In the cage, goalkeeper Grace Chavez had yet another impressive day for the Cardinals. The freshman played 71:19 minutes and notched a career high six saves.
The River Hawks totaled 15 shots while the Cardinals tallied eight. UMass-Lowell racked up 10 penalty corners compared to Ball State's four. This marked the first ever meeting between Ball State and the River Hawks.
The Ball State field hockey team (2-2) will travel to the East Coast next weekend to take on La Salle University (Sept. 8) and Lehigh (Sept. 10).
