June 22, 2017 | Cross Country
MUNCIE, Ind. - - It will be a busy September for the Ball State cross country program which will run five of its six regular season meets in the first month of the season according to the schedule released by third-year head coach Brian Etelman.
The Cardinals open the season at the Butler Opener (Sept. 1), marking the fourth straight season Ball State will travel down I-69 to begin the year on the Bulldogs' course at Northview Christian Church in Carmel, Ind.
Next up, Ball State makes its first trip to the state of Illinois for the Illinois State Invitational (Sept. 8). The Cardinals return to the state of Indiana for the third weekend, running at the Indiana Intercollegiate (Sept. 15) at a site yet to be determined.
The fourth weekend of the season will see the Cardinals travel to Oxford, Ohio, for the RedHawk Rumble (Sept. 23). The meet will serve as a preview for the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship which will also be run on the Miami University Cross Country Course in late October.
The Cardinals close the month of September with its biggest race of the regular season, the Greater Louisville Classic (Sept. 30). With the same E.P Tom Sawyer Park course set to host the NCAA Championships in mid-November, a majority of the nation's top teams can be expected to attend the preview meet.
Ball State's final tune-up before the MAC Championships will be the Bradley Pink Classic (Oct. 13).
The Ball State cross country program will look to continue its climb up the MAC rankings Oct. 28, when it returns to Oxford, Ohio, for the 2017 MAC Championship. Last season, the team earned its first top 10 finish at the league's premier event since the 2012 season. In addition, the squad's average time of 31:01 was the program's best at a MAC Championship since 2011.
Following the MAC Championships, the Cardinals will have an opportunity to compete in both the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (hosted by Indiana State on Nov. 10) and the NCAA Cross Country Championships (hosted by Louisville on Nov. 18).
Overall, the Ball State cross country team returns 10 runners from last season's squad, including three of its top five finishers from the 2016 MAC Cross Country Championships.
