Softball’s Wilmes Named MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week
April 27, 2017 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. – For her performance on the field last weekend versus Toledo, Ball State softball junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week.
A legal studies major with a 3.547 grade point average, Wilmes earns the honor for the first time in her career after throwing her first career no-hitter to help guide the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory in the series opener versus the Rockets last Friday.
With the effort, Wilmes became the first Ball State pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Elizabeth Milian blanked Buffalo in a 7-0 victory May 12, 2010 in the MAC Tournament.
In two appearances and 10.2 innings of work last week, Wilmes limited opposing batters to two hits and a .067 average. She also struck out seven batters, raising her career total to 203 which makes her the 12th player in program history to eclipse 200 career strikeouts.
Wilmes and the Ball State softball team returns to action Friday when it opens a three-game set at Central Michigan with a scheduled 3 p.m. first pitch. The teams also play a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
