February 20, 2017 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team took home both the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week awards Monday afternoon. Junior right-handed pitcher Colin Brockhouse was named the Pitcher of the Week while senior outfielder Matt Eppers earned the nod for Player of the Week.
Brockhouse, a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, equaled a personal high with eight strikeouts in the win over No. 22 Maryland. He came out of the bullpen in a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning and did not allow a run. Brockhouse pitched the final 4.1 innings in the season opening win over the Terrapins and only allowed one hit.
Eppers had what proved to be the game-winning hit against No. 22 Maryland, a two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning. The senior from Bristol, Indiana, added an RBI triple and run a scored in the 3-2 win over Alabama State on Saturday. Eppers led the team in RBIs (three) and slugging (.667) in three games in Florida.
Ohio infielder Michael Klein (East Player) and Kent State pitcher Eli Kraus (East Pitcher) were the other award winners this week.
Ball State (2-1) returns to action next weekend at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, South Carolina. Ball State's opening game of that tournament is on Friday, Feb. 24 against host and defending national champion Coastal Carolina.
