November 16, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - For her efforts both on the court and in the classroom, Ball State women's volleyball sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) has been named to the 2017 Academic All-District Volleyball Second Team as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A speech pathology major with a 4.00 grade point average, Avila earns the honor for the first time in her career after finishing the regular season ranked 41st in the nation with a 4.96 digs-per-set average. Her play in the backcourt helped the Cardinals secure the Mid-American Conference West Division title, as well as the third seed in this week's MAC Tournament.
The two-time defending MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week, Avila became the third-fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs in the Nov. 2 match versus Toledo. She enters the MAC Tournament ranked 13th in program history with 1,088 career digs and needs just 38 more to break into the top 10 on Ball State's career charts.
Avila has collected double digit digs in 28 of Ball State's 29 matches this season, with 20-or-more on 14 occasions. She tied her career high with 36 digs in the Oct. 28 win over Eastern Michigan, while collecting 33 in the Oct. 21 match versus Miami in which the Cardinals recorded a program record for digs in a four-set match in the rally scoring era (2001-present) with 103.
The 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Volleyball Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore in athletic eligibility, and be a starter or key reserve having played in at least 50 percent of their team's contests for the current season.
The Academic All-District program recognizes student-athletes in eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with Ball State being in District 5 which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
The Ball State women's volleyball team opens 2017 MAC Tournament play Friday at 7 p.m. as the third seed and will battle either sixth-seeded Western Michigan or seventh-seeded Central Michigan. The Broncos and Chippewas square off in first round action Thursday at 7 p.m.
