Women's Tennis Competes At ITA Regionals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Ball State women's tennis team competed at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Championships Thursday and Friday which was hosted by Middle Tennessee State.

Newcomer Sarah Swiderski, junior Peyton Gollhofer and sophomore Rebecca Herrington all advanced in their respective draws. Â Swiderski captured a straight set defeat over Tennessee State's Ani Popiashvilli, 6-2, 6-3. Â She then dropped her second match to Austin Peay's Lidia Yanes Garcia, 6-0, 6-3. Â

Gollhofer also grabbed a victory over her opponent after taking a three set thriller over Eastern Kentucky's Kristina Lagoda, 7-6, (1), 0-6, 7-5. Â Gollhofer then suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Purdue's Alex Sabe. Â

Herrington was the last of Cardinals to earn a singles win in the main draw, she advanced by taking down Putri Dwinta in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 before falling to Northern Kentucky's Maria Koo.

In the singles main draw consolation, junior Audrey Berger and senior Julia Sbircea both claimed victories over their respective opponents. Â Berger competed against Dayton's Anna Delaney and won by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Â Sbircea was winning her first set 2-0 over Delaney Edwards of UTC before the match was retired.

Two Ball State doubles teams earned victories in the main draw.  The twosome of Sec and Swiderski paired up to beat fellow Mid-American Conference affiliate Miami University. The RedHawks duo of Emily Storable and Makenzie Myers dropped their match to the Cardinals, 8-3.  Sec and Swiderski then closed main draw play with an 8-4 loss to Louisville. Â

Berger and Herrington also registered an 8-1 victory for the Cardinals after the duo took down Dayton's Anna Delaney and Kelly Pleiman. Â The pair then lost to East Tennessee State, 8-3.

The Ball State women's tennis team will resume competition Saturday at the ITA Regionals in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
