Cross Country Set to Host Cardinal Duals Friday at Elks Country
September 22, 2016 | Cross Country
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State cross country team will look to capitalize from a little home course advantage Friday, when it hosts IUPUI in the Cardinal Duals at the Muncie Elks Country Club. The 5K race is slated to start at 3 p.m.
"Competing on your home course is always fun," distance coach Raynee DeGrio said. "The girls are excited for the meet and it's another opportunity for our young squad to get a little better at racing together."
Ball State's youth will be on full display for the home crowd Friday, as only three members of the squad have competed on the Muncie Elks Country Club course. Leading the way is senior Danielle Dahl (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) who placed 12th in 2014 (Oct. 16) with a time of 19:46.00.
Overall, Friday's contest marks the sixth meet for Ball State at the Muncie Elks Country Club with previous non-championship events being held in 2009 (5K), 2011 (6K), 2012 (5K) and 2014 (5K). The Cardinals also hosted the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships on the 6K Elks Country Club course.
The 5K course record is 17:30 set by Ball State's Ali Bishel (2006-07, 09-10) in the 2009 meet (Aug. 31). The 6K course record is 20:35.3 set by Ohio's Juli Accurso in the 2011 MAC Championships (Oct. 29).
Ball State will be competing against IUPUI for the third time this season on Friday, as the Jaguars also ran in both the Butler Open (Sept. 2) and the Indiana Intercollegiate (Sept. 16). The Jaguars edged out the Cardinals by one point at the season-opener, while finishing 32 points ahead of the Cardinals at last weekend's bigger meet.
"Friday is going to be a little smaller of a meet than we were at last week, which I think is a good thing coming off of a race where we didn't perform as well as I would have liked," DeGrio said. "It will be a good opportunity for us to go out and execute our race plan and get a little better."
Junior Jessica Bryzek (Brownsburg, Ind./Indiana Academy) paced the Cardinals at last weekend's Indiana Intercollegiate, placing 21st among scored runners by finishing the 5K course in 19:31.51.
Freshman Hannah Cummings (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline), who did not compete last weekend, owns Ball State's fastest 5K time of the season after placing fourth overall at the Butler Open in 19:06.3. It was the fastest 5K in a season opener for the Cardinals since the 2012 season.
