#CardinalCamp16 Update: Competition Period
August 18, 2016 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – If you've ever watched a typical collegiate football team practice, most are scripted in a very similar fashion featuring individual drills, team segments and special teams walkthroughs. However, Ball State head coach Mike Neu added a new wrinkle that was popular during his time with the New Orleans Saints – a competition period.
Ball State's version is a slight variation of what was implemented with the Saints, but both serve the same purpose. Towards the end of every practice, coach Neu will bring the team together and announce a competition pitting the offense against the defense. Different players are picked every day to compete in such events like field goal kicking, tug-of-war, one-on-one goal line tackling situations and pushing golf carts.
There are always an odd number of people competing guaranteeing a winner-loser outcome. For more on Ball State's team competition period, check out Joel Godett's All-Access video.
SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE: The Cardinals will hold their second preseason scrimmage during Saturday morning's practice, which is slated to run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Scheumann Stadium.
FAN JAM: Later Saturday afternoon is the annual Fan Jam event. The football team, along with representatives from the other fall Ball State sports teams, will be on hand at Scheumann Stadium for the family friendly event from 5 to 7 p.m. Fan Jam will feature games and interactive stations for kids with the student-athletes, poster signings, photo opportunities and a chance to take a look inside the football locker room. Corporate sponsors McDonald's, Pepsi, Papa John's, Texas Roadhouse, Jimmy John's and Chick-Fil-A will be handing out free food and drink samples to all participants while supplies last. Meanwhile, WLBC 104.1 FM will be broadcasting live from Scheumann Stadium during the festivities. For more information on Fan Jam, please visit ballstatesports.com/fanjam.
