August 14, 2016 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State football team held its first scrimmage Saturday morning at Scheumann Stadium. Both sides of the ball showed promise for the upcoming 2016 football season under first year head coach Mike Neu.
"For our first time out there I feel really good for what I saw," Neu said. "We certainly have a long way to go but if we consistently give today's effort I know we are going to make strides in every facet of the game."
Offense Scores Four Touchdowns: The Cardinals were able to score four touchdowns today despite strong pressure from the defense. After escaping defenders, senior running back Teddy Williamson put the offense on the board first with a 65-yard touchdown run courtesy of a hand off from junior quarterback Jack Milas. Sophomore quarterback Riley Neal connected on three passes in the end zone to three different targets. Neal found senior tight end Sam Brunner for a 2-yard touchdown pass at the corner of the end zone for the second scoring strike of the day. Neal then threw a 30-yard pass up the middle to sophomore wide receiver Devin Reece before ending the day with a 40-yard touchdown pass to freshman running back Malik Dunner.
Defense Getting Stronger: The defense is starting to tighten things up this season and had a strong showing in today's scrimmage. Senior defensive end Joshua Posley blocked Neal's pass in the first stanza. Junior safety Dedrick Cromartie forced a fumble inside the red zone and freshman Mitch Larsen recovered it for the defense. Junior defensive backs Deion Hallmon and David Moore each had interceptions. The defense also had many pass break ups and held the offense to only four scores.
The Ball State football team returns to the field Monday with a pair of practices. The first practice is set to run from 8 to 10:30 a.m., while the afternoon session will go from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
