MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf program has signed Southern Miss transfer Nick Cortez to scholarship papers. Cortez has three years of eligibility remaining.
A product of Evangel Christian School outside Birmingham, Alabama, Cortez was rated as highly as No.1 in his state and No. 52 nationally in the high school class of 2015. He played in four events as a freshman last season at Southern Miss.
"We are excited to welcome Nick and his family to the Ball State golf family," head coach Mike Fleck said. "Nick has experienced a lot of success while competing in events throughout the Southeast as a junior golfer and during his time at Southern Miss. His enthusiasm and commitment to winning will fit in well with our approach, and I look for Nick to make an impact during his time here as a student-athlete."
Originally from Miami, Florida, Cortez won more than 90 tournaments during his junior golf career and had five top-25 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events. He won the AAJGT Vanderbilt Legends Club Championship in 2014 and also finished third at the Future Masters, fourth at the Golfweek Junior Tour Championship and fifth at the Golfweek International Junior Invitational.
Cortez was selected to play this summer in some of the Southeast's most prestigious events, including the Southeastern Amateur, the Greystone Invitational, the Magnolia Amateur and the Cotton States Invitational. He also made it through the first stage of qualifying for the PGA Tour's Barbasol Championship earlier this month.
Ball State is 45 days away from the start of its 2016-17 season. The Cardinals will tee it up Sept. 10-11 at the Wolf Run Invitational in Zionsville for the first of six fall events.
