MUNICE, Ind. – The Ball State men's swimming & diving team was rewarded for its excellence in the classroom, earning distinction as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team for the 2016 spring semester.
The Cardinals' student-athletes combined for a 3.14 team grade-point average, with 16 of the team's 23 student-athletes earning GPAs of 3.000-or-better. Junior Tanner Barton led the squad with a 4.000 GPA for the semester, but more impressively, maintains an unblemished 4.000 GPA for his collegiate career.
In addition, six other Cardinals boasted a GPA of 3.700-or-higher for the semester, including juniors JD Middleton and Mitch Prather, sophomore Nate Slack and freshmen Alex Nickoli, Zach Reichle and Lane Sawyer.
Ball State's 3.14 GPA for the 2016 spring semester ranks 57th among the 95 teams recognized for the award. The Cardinals rank sixth among teams from the Mid-American Conference and fifth among teams from the state of Indiana.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving program has been named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team in all but one semester of head coach Bob Thomas' 37-year tenure with the program. This past fall, the Cardinals boasted the 41st-highest overall GPA among all NCAA Division I men's programs at 3.17.
To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade-point average of 3.00 or higher over the 2016 spring semester. A total of 658 swimming and diving teams (both men's and women's), representing 388 colleges and universities, were honored for the term. It is only the second time in the program's 30+ year history that more than 600 teams were honored.
