Call, Stayton Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State baseball players Alex Call and Caleb Stayton were recently honored on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Call and Stayton were two of 11 players selected from District 5, which encompasses all Division I universities in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Call, a junior from River Falls, Wisconsin, currently leads the nation in doubles (23) and runs scored (62) while ranking ninth nationally in total bases (134). As of May 5, the right fielder led the Mid-American Conference in runs, doubles, triples, total bases and slugging percentage. He has tallied at least one hit in 39 of 48 games this season, which includes a line of 4-of-6 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored against Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
In the classroom, Call completed his bachelor's degree in entrepreneurial management in just three years. He was selected to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team and was also named a 2015 MAC Baseball Distinguished Scholar Athlete.
Stayton, a junior from of Goshen, Indiana, is ranked second nationally in RBIs (63). The first baseman has recorded at least five RBIs three times this spring, including equaling a career high with six RBIs in two contests. As of May 5, Stayton led the MAC in hits (69), batting average (.390) and RBIs (62). He also ranks second on the team with nine home runs and hit the team's only grand slam this season the win over Western Michigan on April 10.
Stayton is majoring in telecommunications and carried a 3.919 GPA through the fall semester.
As members of CoSIDA's Academic All-District team, Call and Stayton will have their names placed on the national ballot. The CoSIDA Academic All-America baseball team will be announced on Friday, June 3.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades, student-athletes must have a key role on the field while maintaining a 3.30 cumulative GPA and must have reached sophomore standing.
