Men's Volleyball Tallies Second Sweep Of The Weekend

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 9 Ball State (20-6, 12-2 MIVA) men's volleyball team took home its second sweep of the weekend when it faced Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opponent Lindenwood (4-16, 2-12 MIVA) on the road Saturday evening in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) final.
For the second consecutive match, junior Brendan Surane led the Cardinals with 11 kills over the course of the three sets, in addition to stopping five Lindenwood attacks with block assists. To follow up his two aces in the second set, Surane marked a match-high five kills and a third service ace in the final game.
Other standouts for the red and white include Edgardo Cartagena, who downed nine kills while hitting a .438 percentage, and sophomore Matt Walsh who marked five block assists over the course of the three sets. Cartagena also took on 17 receptions, while Walsh notched two aces, holding down the defensive lines for the Cardinals in the eighth sweep of the season.
Although the first set held four tie scores and four lead changes, Ball State dominated by only sacrificing three tie scores and two lead changes the remainder of the match.
Ball State ultimately benefited from Lindenwood's 21 attacking errors, in addition to downing a season-high of seven aces. The Cardinals also led in kills (33-30), digs (25-16) and total team blocks (9.5-4.5) in the process of reaching a .338 team attack percentage, while holding the Lions to a .111 mark.
The Cardinals will round out the regular season next weekend as it faces MIVA foes Lewis on April 8 and Loyola on April 9. Both matches will be played on the road and are set for a 7 p.m. central time start.
