MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team opens play against eight other teams this week in the Mid-American Conference Championships.
The 72-hole event gets underway Thursday morning and will be played over three days at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio. The winner earns the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Ball State's lineup will feature senior James Blackwell, sophomores Keegan McKinney, Johnny Watts and Michael VanDeventer, and freshman Timothy Wiseman.
Watts returns to the MAC Championships after taking the individual title last year as a freshman. He was the first Cardinal in 18 years to win the league championship. This season Watts leads the Cardinals with a 73.50 stroke average. He has five top-10 finishes and a pair of runner-up results.
The Cardinals enter the tournament after finishing the regular season with a first-place finish at the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational. Four members of the MAC Championships lineup finished in the top-20 at that event, led by Watts and McKinney in a tie for second.
Miami won the MAC title in 2015, snapping a string of six straight championships for Kent State. The Golden Flashes are the highest ranked team in the field this week at No. 46 in the Golfstat rankings.
The teams will play 36 holes on the opening day, followed by 18 holes Friday and the final round Saturday. Live scoring throughout the tournament is available at golfstat.com.
Ball State's Thursday tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. off the 10th tee at Highland Meadows.
