All-Access: Inside The Gymnastics Floor Exercise
March 09, 2016 | Gymnastics
The most dramatic moments in sports often happen down the home stretch; the walk-off hit, the buzzer beating shot and, in gymnastics, the floor exercise. It's the final event for the home team in dual competition, and for many gymnasts, their favorite event to compete.
On face value floor exercise seems fairly straightforward. It's a 90 second routine that requires three tumbling passes, some jumps, some leaps and some dance. It should have flair. It should be fun. It should be engaging. Okay, maybe it's not so simple after all.
Five times this season the Cardinals have posted their highest score (of the four apparatuses) on floor exercise. In six meets this year the Cardinals have claimed the individual champion on floor and in a little more than a week, Denasiha Christian will compete in the MAC Championships as the two-time defending floor champion.
So all that being said, Ball State All-Access decided to sit down with the Cardinals gymnasts to discuss what exactly goes into producing a perfect floor routine, and how the Cards have perfected the science.
Ball State gymnastics hosts the MAC Championships next Saturday, March 19th, starting at 2pm inside Worthen Arena. For more information on the Cards, follow the team on twitter @BallStateGYM.
