Three Cardinals Receive All-MAC WBB Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three members of the Ball State women's basketball team were honored Monday when the Mid-American Conference announced its annual post-season awards. For the third straight season, senior Nathalie Fontaine was named First Team All-MAC, while junior Jill Morrison was selected Third Team All-MAC for the second time in her career and freshman Carmen Grande earned a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team.
This marks the fifth time Ball State has placed at least three players on All-MAC squads in the same season, with the other being 2014-15, 2008-09, 2007-08 and 1982-83.
A seven-time MAC West Division Player of the Week honoree this season, Fontaine currently ranks first on Ball State's all-time scoring list with 2,114 career points, third in rebounds (955), first in games started (127), second in games played (127), sixth in blocked shots (68), second in field goals made (785), first in field goal attempts (1,594), first in free throws made (527), first in free throw attempts (726) and first in minutes played (4,248). She broke Ball State's single-game scoring record this season with a career high 43 points at Evansville (12/21/15). Fontaine has scored in double figures in all of Ball State's 29 games this season and 115 times out of 127 total games in her career. She has earned 18 double-doubles this season and has 36 for her career. Fontaine has scored 20-or-more points 36 times in her career. She currently leads the team in scoring (21.0), rebounding (10.2) and field goal percentage (51.2). Fontaine is second in the MAC in scoring (21.0) and in rebounding (10.2). She ranks ninth in the nation in double doubles (18), 10th in free throws made (168), 14th in free throw attempts (210), 19th in scoring (21.0), 22nd in rebounds per game (10.2), 23rd in rebounds (296), 26th in final points (608), 27th in defensive rebounds per game (7.0) and 29th in field goals made (220).
This is the second All-MAC accolade for Morrison. Morrison ranks third on the team in scoring (10.7), first in three pointers made (63), second in assists (89) and tied with Fontaine for free throw percentage (.800). She earned her third career MAC West Division Weekly honor for the week of Nov. 30. Morrison knocked down a career high seven three point baskets for 21 points while also dishing out a personal best seven assists in a win over Eastern Michigan (1/20/16). Morrison scored 18 points against Ohio (1/30/16). She currently has 895 points for her career and has started in 63 career games for the Cardinals. Morrison ranks second in the MAC for assist/turnover ratio (2.2).
In Grande's first season she leads the Cardinals in assists (146) and steals (52). She has scored in double figures five times this season which includes a career high 18-point performance at Bowling Green (1/16/16). Grande chipped in 10 points at home against Central Michigan (2/10/16), 13 points at Northern Illinois (2/17/16) and closed the regular season with a 14 point performance at Toledo (3/5/16). Grande dished out a personal best 11 assists at Evansville (12/21/15) and 10 assists against Akron (2/3/16). Grande currently ranks third in the MAC in assists (5.0). Grande has started in all of the Cardinals 29 games this season.
The Ball State University women's basketball team (21-8, 13-5 MAC) received a bye to the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, which starts Wednesday in Cleveland, Ohio. The No. 3 seeded Cardinals could face either No. 6 Eastern Michigan or No. 11 Kent State University Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Quicken Loans Arena.
