Track & Field Visits Notre Dame for Meyo Invitational This Weekend

MUNCIE, Ind. - - With the 2016 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships coming up at the end of the month, the Ball State track & field team will look to build upon its recent success at this weekend's Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
Action in the two-day meet is slated to start Friday at 3:45 p.m. with the first round of field events at the Loftus Sports Center. In all, the Cardinals are scheduled to compete in five events Friday and three events Saturday.
Senior Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) will open the meet for the Cardinals by competing in the weight throw at 4 p.m. Friday, while sophomore Anna-Kay West (Manchester, Jamaica/Manchester) will get Ball State going on the track by running in back-to-back events; the 60m hurdles (4:30 p.m.) and the 60m dash (5:15 p.m.).
Saturday's action for Ball State beings with senior Michaela Hull (Bloomington, Ind./South) in the shot put at 10:30 a.m.
At the Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 22-23), Ball State's student-athletes managed to earn four top six finishes, four season-best performances and one career-best effort. Senior Danielle Dahl (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and freshman Peyton Stewart (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) led the Cardinals by finishing fourth in their respective events. Dahl turned in a season-fast time of 2:15.91 in the 800m run, while Stewart finished just behind her career-best time in the 60m dash, crossing the finish line in 7.64.
In addition to the strong showing from Dahl and Stewart, freshman Amber McGee (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) turned in a strong finish in the 200m dash, winning her heat and placing sixth overall with a time of 25.47. McGee also placed 17th in the 400m dash with a career-fast time of 58.16.
NEWS & NOTES:
- Senior thrower Marie Lumpkin enters the week ranked third in the Mid-American Conference with a career-best and school-record weight throw of 18.55m (60'-10.5”) at the Mastodon Opener (Dec. 5) … She was the first Ball State student-athlete to earn a Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship automatic qualifying mark this season and her effort currently ranks 65th on the NCAA Division I performance list.
- Freshman sprinter Peyton Stewart became the second Ball State student-athlete to earn a MAC Indoor Championship automatic qualifying mark when she crossed the finish line of the 60m dash in 7.61 at the Bowling Green Opener (Jan. 9) … Stewart's time is the fastest for a Ball State sprinter since Amber Williams won the 60m dash at the 2009 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 7.44.
- Three Cardinals enter the week ranked in the top 10 in their respective events on the MAC indoor performance list; Marie Lumpkin is third in the weight throw (18.55m / 60'-10.5”), Peyton Stewart is seventh in the 60m dash (7.61) and freshman Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) is ninth in the high jump (1.68m / 5'-6”).
- Ball State's 4x400m relay team of Amber McGee, Olivia Ashba (Ellettsville, Ind./Edgewood), Danielle Dahl and Gabby Sims (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) turned in a time of 3:53.65 at the Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 23) … The time is the fastest for a Ball State 4x400m relay in a regular season meet since Jan. 22, 2010, when Judah Smith, Tekla Lorenz, Jenna Schmitmeyer, Renyae Owsley clocked in at 3:53.33.
- Through the first four meets of the 2015-16 indoor season, Ball State's student-athletes have collected nine individual victories, one relay win and 33 career-best performances.
