Women's Basketball Starts Season With Convincing Win Over Arkansas-Pine Bluff
November 11, 2016 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Kicking off the 2016-17 season, Ball State women's basketball rolled past Arkansas-Pine Bluff for an 88-60 win Friday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
"I think we did a great job of playing off our defense and turning it into offense," Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee. "The game got a little bit choppy there in the second half, which we've got to learn from. But all in all, a great start to the season."
Today's contest was also a Kids Day Event in which the Cardinals invited local schools to the game and focused on anti-bullying, a subject on which the women's basketball team has been educating local schools since the beginning of the fall semester. Sallee said he was appreciative of the administration for making the environment what it was today.
Three Cardinals finished the game in double figures, led by junior forward Moriah Monaco with 24 points. Senior center Renee Bennett was the second leading scorer and had personal bests in points (22) and rebounds (11). Senior guard Jill Morrison rounded out the double-digit scoring after ending the day with 12 points and while sophomore guard Carmen Granded dished out a game-high nine assists.
Defensively the Cardinals held the Lady Lions to a 29.0 shooting percentage, while Ball State shot 50.9 percent from the field.
The Cardinals set the pace early in the first half after opening the game with an 13-2 run, which was sparked by baskets from Bennett, Morrison and Monaco with just three minutes shaved off the clock. The Ball State scoring spree eventually led the Cardinals to a 51-26 halftime advantage over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Sallee attributed the Cardinals' win to experience, as the Cardinals returned four of their five starters from last season. Ball State also got 18 points from of its bench today. The big lead the Cardinals built also allowed some of the newcomers to some action on the court.
"When you can trot out there with three seniors, a junior, and a sophomore; those five kids, have been through it all in this culture. They've been on the biggest stage."
The Ball State women's basketball team continues action at home when it hosts Evansville Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals defeated the Purple Aces 75-53 last season in Evansville.
