January 07, 2016 | Women's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving program will be back in action on Friday, Jan 8 when it travels to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on IUPUI and Xavier in co-ed competition with the Ball State men's swimming and diving program. The event is slated for a 6 p.m. start at the IUPUI Natatorium.
Prior to the semester break, the Cardinals had an action packed weekend on the road, in which they split to tackle both the Miami Invitational and Eastern Michigan Invitational the weekend of Dec. 3-5. The swimmers finished fifth overall in Oxford, Ohio with 891.5 points, while the divers excelled in Ypsilanti, Mich. with the Ball State men's swimming and diving program and finished fifth overall with 76 points.
Host IUPUI's women's squad has been keyed by junior Maranda Buha and freshman Allison Cicero, both of whom rank among the Summit League's top 10 in three different events this season. Buha, who's battled injuries throughout the season, is second in the 100 fly (55.66), fifth in the 50 free (23.61) and seventh in the 100 free (51.52). Cicero is seventh in the 200 IM (2:06.39), 400 IM (4:28.14) and mile (17:36.66). The team was last in action at the House of Champions event in its home pool in late November in which the Jags took second of 10 teams who participated in the three-day event.
The Musketeers were last in action at the CSU Magnus Cup in late November where the women finished third of 10 teams. A number of personal and school record times were posted at CSU, including a school record in the 200 free relay for Paxtyn Drew, Ashley Whiteley, Caroline Gaertner and Claire Brolsma. Gaertner also took the top spot in XU history in the 100 back at Cleveland State. Katie Kerr set a new school record, and picked up a first place finish, in the 500 free. Maggie Kauffeld set a new standard in XU records in the 200 fly.
When the Cardinals took on IUPUI and Xavier in last year's event, the red and white finished out on top with a score of 178-116 over Xavier, as well as 167-133 over IUPUI.
Looking ahead, the women's swimming and diving team will hold its annual Senior Day festivities on Saturday, Jan. 23 when they host Toledo in Mid-American Conference competition. The meet will be the final home event of the season for the women's swimming and diving program.
