MADISON, Wis. -- James Blackwell of the Ball State men's golf team birdied three straight holes on the back nine Monday to finish with a 2-under par 70 in round two at the Badger Invitational.
Blackwell led the Cardinals to a team score of 296 as they remained in third place out of 12 teams at University Ridge. Ball State's two-day total of 585 (+9) trails only Miami University (-8) and Kansas (-7) with one round left. Tournament host Wisconsin (+20) climbed to fourth, and USC Upstate (+21) is fifth.
Ball State also counted a pair of 75s from Michael Makris and Michael VanDeventer along with a 76 from Johnny Watts in Monday's round. Tyler Ostrom, competing as an individual, fired the second-best score of any Cardinal with a 74, while Tyler Pearson was the team's non-counter with an 80.
The team righted its round down the stretch. After giving up some ground through the first 13 holes, the Cardinals played the final five holes in 2 under as a team to solidify their third-place position.
Ball State continues to have four players among the top 25, now led by Blackwell in a tie for 10th at even-par 144 for the tournament. Makris (+1) is tied for 12th, VanDeventer (+3) is tied for 16th, and Watts (+5) is tied for 20th.
Miami's Patrick Flavin carded his second straight round of 68 to get to 8 under par. He holds a three-shot lead over Chase Hanna of Kansas on the individual leaderboard.
