MADISON, Wis. -- The Ball State men's golf team put together four quality scores Sunday on the way to an opening round of 289 (+1) at Wisconsin's Badger Invitational.
The Cardinals are third after one round at University Ridge, trailing Miami University (-10) and Kansas (-5) in the 12-team field. Illinois State (+7) and Rutgers (+8) round out the top 5.
Ball State has four players in the top 25 led by Michael Makris. The sophomore opened with a 2-under par 70, good for a fifth-place tie. Playing the back nine first, Makris went out in 34 (-2), including an eagle at the par-5 16th hole, before coming home in even par for his second nine.
Makris is two shots off the individual lead of 4 under (68) shared by Miami teammates Patrick Flavin and Greg Conrad. Ball State also counted a 72 from Michael VanDeventer (T-12), a 73 from Johnny Watts (T-17) and a 74 from James Blackwell (T-23) in Sunday's round.
The 289 matched the Cardinals' low score of the season. The previous time was just last week in the final round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. That came on a par-71 layout, while Sunday's round came on a par 72.
Ball State's non-counter Sunday was Tyler Pearson with a 79, while Tyler Ostrom carded an 81 competing as an individual.
The second round will be played Monday with the Cardinals' first tee time at 9:45 a.m. CT (10:45 a.m. ET). The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday.
