MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team has seen a youth movement in the offensive third through the first four games of its 2015 season.
The Cardinals lead the Mid-American Conference with nine goals, and four of those have come from freshmen (Abbie Boswell 2, Kelcy Fiser 1 and Emily Scott 1). Last weekend alone, rookies scored three of the team's five combined goals in wins over Wright State and IPFW.
Ball State (3-1), coming off two dominating offensive performances, will be challenged at this weekend's Stomp in the Swamp event. The Cardinals will square off with a Southeastern Conference team (LSU) for the first time in program history and take on an unbeaten Middle Tennessee squad.
Boswell scored two goals last weekend and paced a Ball State attack that out-shot its two opponents by a combined 57-13 margin. She and sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel swept the MAC Player of the Week awards, giving the Cardinals both the offensive and defensive winners for the first time ever.
But it's not just the young guns doing to scoring. Ball State has had seven different players score a goal already this season. Last year the Cardinals had 14 different goal scorers, which was the most of any team in the MAC.
That depth of scorers could come in handy on the trip to Baton Rouge, as Ball State's two opponents have yet to lose a game. One of them, Middle Tennessee, has not yet surrendered a goal.
LSU (3-0-1) posted a pair of home wins last weekend, defeating Western Kentucky, 4-1, and Minnesota, 1-0. The Tigers also own a win over Oregon and a draw against Northwestern State.
Middle Tennessee (3-0) of Conference USA owns three 1-0 victories. The Blue Raiders opened with an overtime victory over Tennessee Tech and then won games in regulation last weekend over Jacksonville State and Western Carolina.
Ball State will be seeing both of this weekend's opponents for the first time. Indiana is also a part of the Stomp in the Swamp field, but the Cardinals and Hoosiers will not meet this weekend. They will play each other Sept. 13 in Bloomington, Ind.
