Kavanaugh Honored As Conference Player Of The Week
September 15, 2015 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – Lexi Kavanaugh, a junior forward on the Ball State field hockey team, has been named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Cardinals' three games last week.
Kavanaugh, a Sherrill, N.Y. native, recorded back-to-back two goal games including Friday's 3-2 loss against Ohio State, prior to helping the Cardinals defeat Appalachian State 3-2 Saturday in its first victory of the season.
Scoring four of the Cardinals six goals this week, Kavanaugh dominated the offensive strike against Northwestern, Ohio State and Appalachian State. Crucial in helping Ball State tally its first victory of the season against Appalachian State, Kavanaugh took advantage of a one-on-one breakaway and a penalty corner rebound shot to notch her two goals. Prior to the victory over the Mountaineers, Kavanaugh scored both goals for the Cardinals in a narrow matchup against Ohio State and marked three of the team's five shots on goal. Kavanaugh also tallied an assist against Northwestern, helping redshirt senior Bianca Velez score her first goal of the season.
Kavanaugh has been a stand out for the Cardinals since she was named MAC Freshman of the Year in 2013. Also coming in as Ball State's second leading scorer in 2014, Kavanaugh is more than on par to break her season goal record of six, considering she has already notched five goals in the Cardinals first seven matchups. No other Cardinal has more than one goal with the exception of Kavanaugh.
Up next, the Ball State field hockey team will head to Bloomington, Ind. to face Indiana at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.
