SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- Johnny Watts leads the Ball State men's golf team in a tie for 14th place after the opening day at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals finished both of their first two rounds Saturday, but the majority of the field was still on the course in the second round when darkness halted play. Those teams will finish round two Sunday morning, and then the third and final round will begin.
Ball State is tied for 12th place as a team with a score of 614 (309-305). Watts opened with a 1-under par 71 in the first round and followed it with a 75 to sit a 3 over through two rounds.
Derek Kundenreich posted the Cardinals' best score in the afternoon round with a 74.
Preseason No. 1 Illinois leads the way at 12 under par and is on the back nine in its second round. The Illini are 20 shots clear of second-place UCLA.
Illinois' Thomas Detry sits atop the individual leaderboard at 4 under par, one stroke ahead of Virginia's Danny Walker. The majority of the top players still have holes to finish in their second round.
