September 01, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - For her part in helping guide the Ball State women's volleyball team to the 2015 Ball State Active Ankle Challenge title, senior outside hitter Alex Fuelling (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/Morehead State) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week.
Fuelling, who picks up the MAC's top weekly offensive honor for the first time in her career, was named the Most Valuable Performer of the two-day event held inside Worthen Arena after collecting kill/dig double-doubles in all three matches. She also provided three of Ball State's biggest kills in the tournament, depositing the match-winning point in all three Cardinals' victories.
“Alex had the best tournament of her Ball State career,” sixth-year head coach Steve Shondell said. “She did a phenomenal job offensively, but also served strong, passed well and played solid defense. She was our go-to player all weekend long. It's a new beginning for Alex this season, and it was great to see her playing like a senior.”
A 2013 First Team All-MAC selection who also has one MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week award to her credit, Fuelling opened the 2015 season with a match-high 18 kills and 14 digs versus Albany Friday afternoon. In Friday evening's win over Belmont, Fuelling once again led all players with 16 kills, while adding 13 digs. She closed out the two-day tournament with 17 kills and 15 digs in the championship match victory over national-power New Mexico.
Entering the second week of the 2015 season, Fuelling ranks fourth in the MAC in kills-per-set average (3.64) and eighth in attack percentage (.325). She is also averaging 3.00 digs per set on defense and boasts a team-best .963 reception percentage among Ball State's primary passers.
Fuelling and the Ball State women's volleyball team return to action Wednesday, when they travels down I-69 to battle in-state rival IUPUI at 7 p.m. From there, the Cardinals travel further south, to Nashville, Tenn., for the Lipscomb Invitational where it will play the host Lady Bisons (12:30 p.m. CT) and Florida Atlantic (5 p.m. CT) Friday, before closing the two-day event versus Pepperdine Saturday (12:30 p.m. CT).
