#CardinalCamp15 Update: Friday Night Lights
August 15, 2015 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team logged its second two-a-day practice session of the preseason Friday. The Cardinals began the day with an 8:15 a.m. practice before concluding the day under the lights at Scheumann Stadium. Some more news and notes from camp are below …
CHANGE OF PLANS: The Cardinals were originally scheduled to hold their first preseason scrimmage Friday night, but instead shortened practice. Coach Lembo expects to keep the team out of full pads until Tuesday evening due to some injuries.
QUOTING COACH LEMBO: “We have to scale back practice the next couple of days because we have a long list of injuries, definitely more than I like. Fortunately, all of the injuries are short term. There is a sense of urgency to get the guys back. Every repetition missed [in preseason practice] can catch up to us down the road.”
'COMING OUT' DRILL: Midway through practice, the offense faced the situation of moving the ball away from its own end zone. Starting at the two-yard line, sophomore QB Jack Milas connected with junior WR KeVonn Mabon on a key third-down reception, highlighting a drive by the first team. Freshman RB Jack Gilbert ended the period with a big run up the middle of the field for the second team unit.
TWO-MINUTE SITUATION: The defense stepped up in the second team situation of the evening. The offense needed to move the ball into field goal range from its 24-yard line with 1:18 to play and a timeout. In that scenario, the first and second team defense held the offense without a first down on the opening two possessions. Milas found sophomore WR Corey Lacanaria down the seam for a sizable gain on the first team's second drive. That play set up a 45-yard field goal by freshman K Morgan Hagee.
ON TO OVERTIME: Friday night's final session was an overtime situation. Once again, the defense looked sharp, holding the offense to a pair of field goals on the first two drives. Junior RB Teddy Williamson found the end zone later in the period thanks to a 10-yard burst through the middle of the line.
FAN JAM: The annual fan favorite is tomorrow night. Fan Jam features football skills stations for fall sports, poster giveaways, autographs, cheerleaders, Code Red dancers, Charlie Cardinal and free food from corporate partners. Fans can also check out the new playing surface and take a walk around the locker room and meet student-athletes and coaches from a variety of sports. Fan Jam will be held at Scheumann Stadium Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.
