#CardinalCamp15 Update: Full Contact on Monday Night
August 11, 2015 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – For the second time during this preseason camp, the Ball State football team practiced under the lights at Scheumann Stadium. The student-athletes were given the green light for full contact and there was plenty of it during the lively practice. Some more news and notes from preseason camp practice six are below …
WHO'S IN CHARGE OF THE MUSIC? At the beginning of most practices, music can be heard over the speaker system playing the players' favorite tunes of the day. Every now and then, the coaching staff slips in its preferred music list during warm-ups and tonight was one of those nights as many of The Who's best hits were rocking Scheumann Stadium.
TIGHTEN THE CHIN STRAPS: The defense stole the show today in both of the team situations. The first team period was a sudden change scenario that gave the offense the ball after a turnover. The defense quickly rose to the occasion and held the offense on three downs.
MORE DEFENSE: The end of Monday's practice saw extended time of offense against defense. The defense stopped the offense on each of the first two drives, which featured the first and second team units. Newcomer DB Terin Solomon ended the second drive with a solid pass break-up. Other defensive highlights included LB Jeremiah Jackson making a big stop on a running play at the line of scrimmage and junior LB Sean Wiggins coming away with a fumble recovery at the end of the session.
OFFENSE MAKES SOME NOISE: Junior WR KeVonn Mabon put some life into the offense during the group's third drive during the team session. Mabon made a terrific catch over two defenders on a third-down reception to give the offense a first down. Later on, sophomore WR Ralph Smith III earned some praise from the offensive reserves after making a cutback move on a reception along the left sideline.
GET SOME REST: Because the football team will be participating in the annual 'Paint the Town Red' event tomorrow and not practicing, the student-athletes have been scheduled an extra hour of sleep to recover from Monday's physical practice.
KEEP AN EYE ON: There are lots of players currently in the shuffle in the two deep on special teams. The coaching staff has plenty of tape to review after running a two-on-two punt and return drill early in Monday's practice.
