Joel Walton To Coach World University Games In Korea

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State men's volleyball head coach Joel Walton will travel to Gwangju, South Korea this Sunday to serve as an assistant coach for the United States at the World University Games held July 4-12.
The team is constructed of a 12-man roster that includes two Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association players, Greg Petty and Bobby Walsh of Lewis. UC-Irvine head coach David Kniffin will serve as head coach of the program while David Heller of Mount Olive rounds out the coaching staff.
Athletes eligible for participation in the 28th Summer World University Games must be between the ages of 17 and 28, currently be enrolled in at least three credit hours, have been enrolled within the past year, or are working towards advancement in their degree. The US will have a representation of 550 people, which will be the largest team in US history.
The 12-day competition will include 20,000 athletes, coaches, staff, and volunteers from 170 countries.
Second to the Olympics, the World University Games has been a platform for many famous American athletes. Elite athletes who have represented the US in the past are Michael Johnson (track), Charles Barkley and Larry Bird (men's basketball), Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps (swimming), and Lisa Leslie (women's basketball).
