June 10, 2015 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State women's basketball fourth-year head coach Brady Sallee announced Wednesday that Alana Aguirre (Frisco, Texas, Justin Wakeland HS) has committed to play at Ball State for the 2015-16 season.
“We couldn't be happier than to welcome Alana to our women's basketball program,” Sallee said. “She brings a skillset at the wing position that we simply do not have. Her ability to make plays and create for not only herself, but her teammates was something we were looking to add to our roster. Alana will impact us from multiple positions and whether it is by scoring, rebounding or helping to lead our team, her addition to our roster will be a big one!”
Aguirre is the daughter of former DePaul all-American and two-time National Basketball Association champion Mark Aguirre.
Aguirre will join early signees Lucia Fernandez (Madrid, Spain), Carmen Grande (Madrid, Spain), Cat Wells (Toledo, Ohio), Destiny Washington (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Nakeya Penny (Logansport, Ind.) for the 2015-16 season.
"I chose Ball State because the university offers a great education and college environment that will allow me to grow both academically and socially," Aguirre said. "I also love what this coaching staff and team stands for. Coach Sallee truly believes in me and my abilities and I know that he will put me in a position to succeed both on and off the court.”
Aguirre, a 5-10 guard, transferred to Ball State from Abilene Christian. She attended Justin Wakeland High School where she earned First Team All-Region in 2013 and 2014. Aguirre was District 9-4A Newcomer of the Year (2011), Offensive Player of the Year (2012, 2014) and First Team All-District (2013). She was a McDonald's All-American nominee and was a top-25 recruit in the state of Texas. For her career, Aguirre averaged 15 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. This includes a single-game career high of 33 points and a triple-double of 15 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists.
“Alana is a very talented athlete," Justin Wakeland head girls basketball coach Jenny Mills said. "She sees the floor extremely well, and her ability to get the ball to her teammates is one of her best qualities. She is a selfless player, and will be an asset in any system!"
Academically, Aguirre earned first team all-academic all four years at Justin Wakeland High School and was honored by state legislature of Texas for her outstanding athletic achievement.
