May 30, 2015 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State outdoor track & field senior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) has qualified to compete in the high jump at the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary Competition at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
The three-day meet, which is hosted by the University of North Florida and the City of Jacksonville, runs May 28-30. The women's high jump competition is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. Saturday (May 30).
Lomax, who will be competing at the NCAA Preliminary Competition for the third time in her career, earned her spot in the high jump this season by clearing the bar at a season-best height of 1.75m (5-feet-8.75) at the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Ball State April 17. She also cleared the same height at the Louisville Twilight (May 8) and the 2015 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 16).
In her first trip to the NCAA East Prelims as a freshman in 2011, Lomax placed 18th in the high jump with a mark of 1.75m (5-feet-8.75). She returned to the preliminary competition as a sophomore, placing 39th with a mark of 1.67m (5-foot-5.75). After sitting out the 2012-13 season to focus on her training as a dance major, Lomax returned to competition during the 2014 indoor season only to suffer a season-ending injury at the Hillsdale Invitational (Feb 7, 2014).
Lomax saw limited action in the 2014 outdoor season, competing in short sprints due to her injury, before returning to full competition for both the 2014-15 indoor and outdoor campaigns. At the 2015 MAC Indoor Championships, Lomax placed fourth in the pentathlon with a career-best score of 3,765 points, while her mark of 1.75m in the high jump at the outdoor league meet placed fifth.
Lomax enters the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary Competition with a career-best outdoor high jump of 1.78m (5-foor-10) set when she won the event at the MAC Outdoor Championships (May 14, 2011) as a freshman. She also tied her career-best mark in the first meet of her sophomore outdoor campaign, the 22nd Annual Indiana Wesleyan University Polar Bear Invitational (March 24, 2012).
For each individual event contested at each of the Preliminary sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition. Combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), are not contested at the Preliminary sites.
Qualifying to the National Championships held June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, is accomplished through performance in the Preliminary site competitions. Twelve competitors from each individual event and twelve teams from each relay event advance from each Preliminary site. For combined events (Heptathlon and Decathlon), the top 24 declared student-athletes in each event based on their position on the national descending-order list will be accepted into the Championships.
