The Ball State men's golf team will tee it up this week at the Mid-American Conference Championships outside Cleveland.
The 72-hole event gets underway Friday morning and will be played over three days at the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club-Sand Ridge in Chardon, Ohio.
Ball State will send a lineup featuring senior McCormick Clouser, junior Tyler Ostrom, and a trio of freshmen -- Johnny Watts, Michael VanDeventer and Michael Makris.
Clouser, a four-time MAC Golfer of the Week this season, leads the Cardinals with a 73.93 stroke average. He owns three top-10 finishes, including a win at Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Golf Classic. He is also the only member of the Ball State lineup with previous MAC Championships experience.
The three freshmen have all been consistent members of the Ball State lineup this season (Watts has played in every event). Ostrom recently returned after missing several months to injury and earned a spot in the lineup before the last regular season tournament.
Kent State enters the tournament as the six-time defending champion. The Golden Flashes defeated Akron by 10 shots to win last year at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. The other eight teams will be looking to dethrone the Flashes to earn the league's automatic NCAA berth.
Ostrom leads the Cardinals off the first tee Friday at 9:10 a.m. The teams will play 36 holes on the opening day, followed by 18 holes Saturday and the final round Sunday. Live scoring throughout the tournament is available at golfstat.com.
