HAMILTON, Ohio - The third-seeded Ball State women's tennis team (17-5) earned its ticket to the 2015 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championships with a 4-2 win over second-seeded Western Michigan (15-9) Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Athletic Club.
Ball State will be making its first appearance in the MAC Tournament Championship ever in program history.
The Cardinals will face No. 1 Miami Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. The RedHawks advanced to the championship match after defeating Eastern Michigan 4-1 earlier this afternoon.
"Last time we played Western I did a poor job preparing us," Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said. "Today our players came out focused and with a lot of energy, that was awesome to watch. I'm so impressed and proud of our team. We are excited for tomorrow. Go cards!"
After losing on the road to Western Michigan 5-2 in a match played in Kalamazoo, Mich., March 27, the Cardinals were able to take the doubles point from the Broncos to start the match with an early 1-0 advantage.
The No. 2 doubles tandem of Bethany Moore and Coutney Wild won the first doubles match, the top court clinched the doubles point after Courtney Earnest and Rosalinda Calderon took down Caroline Aleck and Meika Ashby by a score of 6-1.
At No. 6 singles, Moore was the first off the court for the Cardinals. It was the second day in a row Moore managed a straight set victory after defeating Aleck, 6-2, 6-2 to put Ball State up 2-0 over Western Michigan. The Broncos would earn the next two points to knot the match 2-2 after posting wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
With three courts still playing, Calderon would win 6-0, 7-6 (9-7) at the No. 5 spot to give Ball State the 3-2 lead. Wild would soon follow Calderon's winning ways on the top court, taking the third set against Ashby, securing the match for the Cardinals.
