Track & Field Opens Strong At MAC Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team opened the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships with several strong performances and are currently in fifth place out of the 12th teams at Central Michigan's Jack Skoog Indoor Track & Field Complex.
Ball State opens the second day of competition at the 2015 MAC Championships at 11 a.m. Saturday with the triple jump.
Overall, the Cardinals scored in four of the six events completed on the first day of competition to post 20 total points. Eastern Michigan is currently leading the meet with 48.75 points, followed by Akron (43.75), Kent State (31.75), Northern Illinois (25), Ball State (20), Toledo (19), Bowling Green (12), Buffalo (10), Central Michigan (8.75), Ohio (8), Western Michigan (5) and Miami (2).
Senior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) put the Cardinals on the board with five points in the meet's opening event by placing fourth in the pentathlon with a career-best score of 3765 points. The score is the second-best individual effort in program history. She won both the high jump (1.72m / 5-7.75) and shot put (12.70m / 41-8), while placing fourth in the long jump (5.29m / 17-4.25), seventh in the 800m run (2:29.82) and 10th in the 60m hurdles (9.32) among pentathlon participants. Her time in the 800m run was also a career-fast clocking.
Ball State's best performance came in the long jump, with sophomore Makelle Skelton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) placing second and junior Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) taking third. Skelton turned in a career-best leap of 5.88m (19-3.5) to score eight points for the Cardinals, while Crawford's jump registered 5.84m (19-2) to bring in six points.
Ball State's other point on the opening day of competition came in the weight throw, with junior Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) placing eighth with a toss of 17.22m (56-6).
Junior Danielle Dahl (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) will also put points on the board for the Cardinals tomorrow in the 800m run, as the qualified for the finals by placing fifth in the prelims with a time of 2:14.62.
