February 10, 2015 | Men's Golf
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State men's golf team won its opening-round match Monday over Seton Hall at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
The Cardinals were in the midst of their second-round match with No. 1 seed Eastern Michigan on Lake Jovita's South Course when play was suspended for the day because of rain.
The second round will resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The suspension means there will not be time to play the third and final round Tuesday. The winners of the two semifinal matches in the championship bracket will be named co-champions. The other semifinal features Miami University and Toledo.
Ball State, seeded fifth based on Golfstat rankings, earned a 4-2 win over No. 4 seed Seton Hall in its opening match Monday. The Cardinals notched wins from McCormick Clouser, James Blackwell and Johnny Watts. They also picked up a point from Michael Makris when his opponent had to withdraw before the match.
The Cardinals moved on to meet Eastern Michigan, which survived an upset bid from No. 8 seed Florida Atlantic. The teams tied 3-3, but the Eagles advanced on the tiebreaker (most holes won).
At the time play was stopped midway through the second round, Ball state was leading Eastern Michigan in three matches and trailing in two. One match was all square.
Toledo had the advantage over Miami in the other semifinal. The two suspended matches in the consolation bracket feature Seton Hall versus Florida Atlantic and Ohio versus Dayton.
