Women's Swim & Dive Soars In Second Day Of Invite Action

OXFORD, Ohio - The Ball State women's swimming and diving team continued action at the 22nd annual Miami Invitational Friday afternoon. After the second of three days of competition, the Cardinals sit fifth overall, with a team score of 674.5, and participated in seven events throughout the day.
To open the action in the Corwin Nixon Natatorium, the combination of Jenna Zitkus, Amanda Kedzierski, Andrea Richter and Jessica Extine posted a 1:46.39 final in the 200 medley relay for a seventh place finish. They were trailed by Mikayla Dostall, Sydney Harris, Maryn Meldrum and Lauren Elston who marked a 1:47.71 time for tenth in the same event.
Ball State had four participants in the finals of the 400 IM, with sophomore Traci Muszalski and junior Kimberly Scott tallying the team's top times. Muszalski touched the wall in 4:31.62, while Scott followed with a 4:31.72.
The event was then followed up by the 100 fly, in which six Cardinals took on. Sophomore Richter was the first Ball State swimmer to touch the wall at 56.91, while freshman Meldrum earned a 57.94 time. Katie Horn (58.30), Zitkus (59.27), Extine (58.73) and Taylor Miles (59.76) all partook in the event as well.
Freshman Elston stood out when she was the lone Cardinal to participate and in the 200 freestyle finals, and was able to mark a 1:56.33 final.
The event was then followed up by two popular races in which six Ball State swimmers took on, including the 100 breast and 100 back. Top times in the 100 breast included Kedzierski's 10th place finish in a 1:05.07 fashion, Harris' 1:05.82 final for 14th and Kaiti Sullivan's 1:08.00 mark for 17th, while Richter's 58.18 time for 13th in the 100 back was followed by Dostall's 58.70 final for 14th and Zitkus' narrow 58.74 time for 15th.
Rounding out the second day of competition in Oxford was done when Muszalski, Hannah Cressman, Audrey Mayer and Morgan Brebberman marked a 7:49.77 time in the 800 freestyle relay. Liz Madison, Kedzierski, Scott and Elston were close behind in the event and touched the wall in 7:50.08.
After the first 12 events of the three day Invitational, Miami dominates action in the pool with a team score of 1635.5. Emory University sits in second with 1083 points, followed by Toledo who has earned 1068 points. The Cardinals sit between Denison University with 998.5 points, and Urbana who holds 110.5 points. Additions to the second day of competition included Kentucky, who as earned a team score of 95, and the University of Cincinnati, who has marked 81 points.
The Ball State women's swimmers will continue action at the Miami Invitational tomorrow, while the women's divers will begin competition in conjunction with the Ball State men's swimming and diving program at the Eastern Michigan Invitational from Dec. 4-5.
