Lumpkin Named MAC Women?s Field Athlete of the Week
December 11, 2015 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - For her record-setting performance at last Saturday's Mastodon Opener, Ball State track & field senior thrower Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Lumpkin, who earns the honor for the first time in her career, opened the 2015-16 indoor season by posting a school-record mark of 18.55m (60'-10”) to win the weight throw at the Mastodon Opener. An elementary education major with a 3.687 grade-point average, Lumpkin's effort currently ranks 11th on the NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Performance List and is 0.75m longer than the second-best thrower in the MAC after the first weekend of competition.
“If someone would have told me that we would set a school record in the first meet, I would have told them they were crazy,” first-year field events coach Stephen Krupa said. “It just shows how much hard work pays off. It has been a pleasure working with Marie thus far, and I look forward to her breaking the school record many times to come.”
Lumpkin set the tone early in her senior season with her school record toss which was .07m further than the previous mark of 18.48m set by Janee Langhorne in 2002 and later tied by Cara Collins in 2008. Lumpkin entered the meet ranked third in program history with a mark of 18.36m set at last season's Ball State Open (Feb. 20, 2015).
Lumpkin and the Ball State track & field team turn their attention back to training for the next few weeks, before opening the second semester and the main portion of the season at the Bowling Green Opener Jan. 9.
