Watts, Blackwell Lead Men?s Golf on Hawaii Day 1

LAHAINA, Hawaii -- The Ball State men's golf team opened with a round of 290 (+6) Friday at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
Johnny Watts led the Cardinals with a 2-under par 69 to tie for 15th through the opening 18 holes. James Blackwell opened with a 71 and is tied for 25th.
Ball State also counted a pair of 75's from Michael VanDeventer and Timothy Wiseman on the Royal Ka'anapali Course at Ka'anapali Golf Club. Michael Makris shot a 76.
The Cardinals are 10th on the team leaderboard with two rounds to play and are just five strokes out of the top five. Oklahoma leads the way at 276 (-8), while NC State (-5) and Hawaii (-2) are also in red figures.
Oklahoma's Rylee Reinertson and Long Beach State's Jonny Hogan share the individual lead after rounds of 65 (-6). A total of 31 players are at even par or better.
The 18-team field includes five teams ranked among the top 40 in the country.
