MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State cross country team returns to action Friday, when it takes the starting line at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis., for the 2015 NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Wisconsin.
The women's 6K race is scheduled to start at Noon CT / 1 p.m. ET. Representing the Cardinals will be sophomore transfer Kitty Taylor (Newburgh, Ind./Castle/St. Mary-of-the-Woods College), junior Jordan Timmons (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) and junior Ericka Rinehart (Angola, Ind./Angola).
“We are hoping to go out and see some good performances against some of the best competition in the country,” first-year Ball State distance coach Raynee DeGrio said. “This is a great course, which will give our student-athletes a chance to run fast times. This race will also give us a chance to redeem ourselves after a disappointing performance at the conference meet.”
The Great Lakes Regional includes 32 women's teams, with three of those squads ranked among the top 25 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches' Poll. The ranked teams include; No. 7 Michigan, No. 15 Notre Dame and No. 18 Michigan State.
Ball State's three individual runners will be racing for a chance to make the upcoming NCAA Championships which will be held Nov. 21 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The top two teams and the top four individual runners from a non-qualifying team at Friday's regional meet advance to the NCAA Championship Race.
Timmons was Ball State's top runner at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championship hosted by Akron Oct. 31 at the Canton GlenOak Community Park in Canton, Ohio. She placed 65th among scored runners with a time of 23:10.9. Taylor and Rinehart were next in the finishing order for the Cardinals, with season-fast times of 23:23.1 and 23:52.9, respectively. Taylor's effort was also a career-fast mark.
