Men's Tennis Competes at Old Gold and Black Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team ended competition at the Old Gold and Black Classic Sunday afternoon at Purdue.
"This was a very productive weekend,” Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. "Our four guys got a lot of match play which was our primary purpose. Patrick Downs and Matt Helm played extremely well in doubles going 4-0. Downs and Tom Carney had good singles results winning 3 of 4. Overall it was a successful weekend."
In singles action, Tom Carney posted a 3-1 overall mark with straight set wins over Purdue's Matt Bouggy (6-2,6-4), IUPUI's Kyle Whittaker (7-6 (3), 6-2) and the Jaguars' Mikel Saavedra (6-0, 6-1). Patrick Downs also went 3-1 for the weekend posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lucas Dages of Purdue. Downs also took down Jose Calero and Patrick McAuley of IUPUI in straight sets.
Ball State ended its weekend at Purdue with doubles play Sunday. Downs and Matt Helm posted a 4-0 record. The Cardinals twosome managed a 6-2 victory over Purdues Lucas Dages and Dominik Sochurek. Downs and Helm then defeated IUPUI's duo of Whittaker and McAuley also by a score of 6-2. The doubles tandem closed doubles play with a 7-5 win over the Jaguars and a 6-1 victory over the Boilermakers. Carney and Patrick O'Connor went 2-2 in doubles play.
The Ball State men's tennis team closes fall play when it travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., Friday for the Mid-American Indoor Individual Championships which will be hosted by Western Michigan.
