Gymnastics Team Hosting MAC Opener Friday
January 22, 2015 | Gymnastics
Ball State's gymnastics team will host Central Michigan Friday in its Mid-American Conference opener in Irving Gym of the Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center at 7 p.m. The event is free admission for all interested fans.
While the Cardinals will be opening MAC competition, the Chippewas are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the league. Central Michigan posted victories over Eastern Michigan and Seattle Pacific in a tri-meet last week. Ball State competed at Iowa vs. the Hawkeyes and Michigan State and finished third in the three-way meet.
In its last meet, Ball State freshman Jordyn Penny led the Cardinals with a tie for second on the vault (9.775), a tie for third on the bars (9.825) and was the team's top all-around performer (38.475).
"It is great to see our freshmen on the road being competitive against two Big Ten teams their first time out," Ball State head coach Joanna Saleem said. "We plan to use the experience we had during our first two meets against high caliber teams to help us as we enter into the MAC portion of our competition schedule. Jordyn Penny had a solid meet despite having a fall in her first event. She is figuring out how to compete in college and is handling herself very well."
Ball State opened the 2015 season with a home meet against two-time defending national champion Florida.
The video from the meet vs. Central Michigan will be streamed live, but due to the format of the competition Ball State's gymnasts will be primarily featured.
